All the things that went wrong at my previous brunch experience went so right at this one. I took a long walk from my hotel in the heat of October in Alexandria and ended up walking the streets I so adored 11 years ago. Stopping into CF, I was greeted at the door, and because it was just one, there was the perfect seat for me outside: #1 dining alone perk.
I ordered a mimosa, coffee (which was divine) and settled on the French toast bread pudding, which was a recommendation from the host. I could not have enjoyed the low-playing music more; just enough hipster for this aging heart and the low murmur of friends and lovers meeting up and sharing stories about Friday night and weekend plans. Surrounded by all-ages, and even a second floor baby shower, all walks of life welcome here.
As my first coffee refill came around, it was time for French toast redemption and this was it. Sweet, borderline cloying, but stopped just perfectly at the edge. Teetering on way too much and holy hell that was the perfect Saturday morning dish. Could it be said that it was more breakfast dessert than breakfast-breakfast? Sure. But isn’t that what brunch is for? That plate was definitely made better by the 2 hours I spent in the gym later that night.
I ate half and packed up the rest for a friend back at the hotel. Slowly sipped robust roast, finished my mimosa, and took the long walk back, seeing myself out onto the uneven, but beautiful sidewalk of Old Town.
I don’t often eat alone… but I’ll definitely be found at CF enjoying a little peace and quiet by myself next time I’m in the area.

That food looks crazy good. I like the atmosphere, but honestly, it’s the food that would get me there in a heartbeat. I can eat anywhere as long as it’s good, and that looks GOOD.
