Current Home Décor Trends You Probably Haven’t Heard Of

Trends change with every passing year — sometimes, with every passing season — so it’s not your fault if you’re not up to date with the latest design must-dos. But, if you’re considering a home update, you’ll want to do your homework to ensure that your investment is one that’ll feel as modern and fresh as you want. To make that task a little simpler, here are nine of the year’s hottest design trends to incorporate for an instant refresh:

1. Dark Accents

Once upon a time, it was all about white painted accents. Now, though, you can make your molding and window trim even more striking with a coat of dark black paint instead: darker accents tend to make your home feel more vintage, yet more modern. That’s typically a hard middle ground to find, but it’s easily achievable with a slick of black paint.

The same goes for the hardware in your kitchen and bathrooms, too: black hardware is gaining in popularity this year. You might even consider repainting your floors or furniture in a midnight hue, as those elements become more desired, too.

2. Succulents

The indoor houseplant has always been a popular addition to a room’s design, but there’s only one problem: you have a black thumb and are therefore afraid to bring in any new greenery.

Succulents can change all that, as they require very little upkeep while still providing that flash of green that makes houseplants such a desired design element. You can incorporate succulents just about anywhere: they’ll grow just as happily on your bedside table as they will in the center of your countertop. And, don’t forget, the more, the merrier: cluster a few different cacti for an even more eye-catching centerpiece.

3. Statement Curtains

Window treatments are an oft-neglected element of home décor, but, once you install curtains of your own, you’ll see that this is a big mistake. In 2018, make a point to learn more about the power of window coverings, especially bold, bright panels. A floor-to-ceiling curtain with a saturated hue or colorful pattern will set the tone for the entire space. In fact, you can go simple with everything else because your focal point is already hanging from your windows.

4. Ornate Ceilings

A decorator’s focus has traditionally been on a room’s walls: what color will look best? What wallpaper will work? Should we use a texture or patterned paint treatment? In 2018, you might want to apply these same questions to the ceilings in your home. More and more home decorators are finding that the same traditional wall treatments can make a much bolder statement when transferred to the ceiling.

5. Bluish-Green Walls

Every year, major brands like Sherwin-Williams, Behr and Dunn-Edwards choose a hue of the year from their collection of paints. For 2018, all three selected a color that’s bluish-green, although each one presents a different degree of brightness: Behr’s is light and subdued, Dunn-Edwards’ is a bit brighter and darker, and Sherwin-Williams’ is supersaturated and statement-making. In other words, you can choose any color within the blue-green spectrum and know you’re in style.

6. Handmade Furniture

Today’s home decorator is growing a little tired of the cookie-cutter furniture and accessory options at their local store. Instead, they’re searching for local and far-flung artisans who make pieces with their two hands. You can easily bring these types of items into your home: search out a furniture maker in your hometown, or search sites like Etsy for handmade accents: wall art, light fixtures, centerpieces for your table, etc.

7. Mixed Metals

If you keep up with fashion trends, you know that it was once considered a faux pas to wear silver and gold jewelry at the same time. Now, though, that rule has been overturned in favor of layered baubles in every metallic hue under the sun.

It turns out that mixed metals are a stunning accessory in your home, too, although there are some tips to help you strike a balance. For starters, you’ll want to choose a dominant shade and accent that with pops of another metallic. Don’t be afraid to mix cool shades like silver or stainless with a warm brass or rose gold, either — the contrast will make both colors pop.

8. Velvet and Other Luxe Fabrics

Your home is your castle, and this year’s design trends will make it feel that way, too. That’s because more and more designers are incorporating velvet and other luxury fabrics into their plans. This doesn’t mean that your family room won’t be a place you can curl up and relax without fear of staining or ruining your throw pillows: updated velvet is blended with polyester to fight stains while retaining its soft, upscale feel.

9. Home as a Haven

Most of all, 2018 is the year to separate your home from the outside world. It’s a place where you’ll disconnect from the chaos of current events, work, social gatherings… everything that causes stress and pressure should dissipate as soon as you get home. So, as you design your home, always keep an eye to its coziness factor: when you feel comfortable and relaxed, then you know you’ve done it right — by 2018 standards and your own.
