When we were first a family, my pictures were of a sweaty newborn and acne-riddled mama. I thought they were horrid. We didn’t belong on a magazine cover, or in an ad. We needed a shower. And I find myself in the same predicament even today; oddly caught off guard, trying to nurse a baby back to sleep in the car in a parking lot, or laughing hysterically at my toddler who decides to dig in the dirt at a friend’s baseball game.
But those moments. They were real. Really beautiful. Really amazing. Really raw. The #UnscriptedBeauty of our lives, captured in those first few moments. Days. Weeks. As a family. As real parents. As toddlers doing what toddlers will. Those moments were will always be amazing.
As the weeks turned to months, the months to years, and we morphed into a family of 4, those moments never ceased to amaze me. The times I would just stop and notice how ridiculous the kids are, how complete they make me… and how their father, my sweet husband, has transformed me into the woman I think I was meant to be. His smile, his tenderness with our girls, the patience he has with me… all of that lets me be a bit rough around the edges. It makes our relationships grow… and capturing them is my favorite thing in the world. The times we held hands when the kids were playing with each other, the sweet caress from big sister to little sister… and one of my favorites: when Millie first climbed up the side of our dog’s head to give his ear a gentle nibble.
Our unscripted moments… the ones when I didn’t say “cheese”. Those are the ones that define us, after all. Aren’t they? I have a favorite photo of my father and me… we are in Disney. It would be years before his passing. I remember asking for the pink sailor hat- it was embroidered in-store. It was a big deal then- very high-tech. I felt like the night would never end. I keep this photo on my desk… it’s the best moment of #UnscriptedBeauty- the parent/child relationship… a moment I hope to repeat with my children again and again, only to be caught on camera more often, and cherished as a piece of art, as I have cherished my own.
All of these moments come together in many of my photos… and now AVEENO is hosting the most awesome contest to spread the love- with the winner receiving a photo-shoot from acclaimed photographer, Danielle Guenther, as well as AVEENO products! (announced in July)

Unscripted moments involving my son are my favorite. My world revolves around him and everyone else is just living in it. There’s nothing like those special moments with a child. They truly are beautiful, even if you don’t realize it at the time.
