It’s SUMMER!!! This means a lot in our family, from BBQs and late nights around the fire pit, to DANCE WEEK- where Addie has her dress rehearsal, last class, and recital. Tack on last tball practice and game, and you’ve got one busy schedule… did I mention Mima and Pa (my parents) are driving up from Philadelphia to enjoy the final festivities with us? This makes our only full bathroom, which is rather small, a bit of a meeting up upstairs.
Needless to say, this past weekend was hectic (and fierce)!
With someone waking up every half hour from 5:30am to 8am, the bathroom is the first place both ourselves and our guests really see, and even I’ve come to dread it. The walls were painted green when we purchased the home, and though it’s not the shade I would have chosen, it was freshly done and is holding up well. The brown towels we came with worked well in our first home, but being 8 years old, they’re tattered and bleached. Their color dulls the room, making it appear smaller, and the floor rug has lost much of its backing, letting it slip all over the place. And the floor… the patterned tile is a bit of a clash with the shower tile, and I’d love a simple floor without pattern to open up the look and give more simple, clean lines.
When we moved in September of 2015, I remember it was 9:30pm before we realized after a hot day of unloading a moving truck, we had no shower curtain… this made showing our sweaty selves off rather difficult- so I ran out to Target and found the perfect shower curtain and hooks. The pattern was fun and it pulled the green from the walls and brown from the towels we already had! It was perfect… for then. This past week, when I decided to refresh the bathroom before my parents’ visit, I went back to Target hoping to find something to brighten up our little space and pull the blue from the curtain. With a desire to freshen the room with a clean look, I needed to add more bright color!
In all of my home’s decor I look for bold patterns as a base and solids to bring it all together. In lieu of whipping out an entire can of paint, or a whole re-tile, I simply looked to my lackluster towels to make a new summer statement!
There were so many options, patterns, sizes, and textures that it was a total playground, and referencing a picture of my shower curtain, it was easy to find a complementary color. There’s even a matching contour floor mat for a completed look! I even snagged a sand-color pack of washcloths from the end cap as the perfect makeup removers, and to pull the whole bright summer theme together. The color gives a homage to the browns that are quite relevant in the bathroom, from the tiles to the shower curtain, but bright enough to keep the look very beachy, bright, and functional!
As I headed towards the checkout, Target’s Cartwheel app reminded me to check it out, where it gave me an alert to 10% off Quilted Northern Mega Toilet Paper from 6/20-7/8! YES PLEASE! With 4 adults and 2 kids sharing the house for almost 5 days, the only way to go is Quilted Northern® Mega Rolls. One roll is equal to 4, which means no calls from the bathroom asking for a new one.
I have enough responsibility working from home and caring for the ladies all day… one less chore works for me! I want to enjoy these summer months and my pretty bathroom- not dread its existence! But these rolls are more than just 4-in-one, Quilted Northern® Mega Rolls are soft and strong. As parents, Dave and I need to make sure the paper stands up to the kids- I know you mamas and papas out there get it- and the girls need to like it!
When you have a small space and a lot of people, it can be hard to keep the bathroom fresh and pretty. Streamlining your decor and adding brightness and a cohesive look, paired with less busy work, and you’ve got a summer long-weekend of guests enjoying tball and dance with less worry!
Ready to refresh your small bathroom?
- Take a well-lit photo of your shower curtain, or the statement piece in your bathroom that you want to grow from.
- Head to Target’s Bath aisles and decide: pattern or solid towels.
- If you go pattern, stick with a solid curtain. Too much pattern is dizzying and makes your space seem claustrophobic.
- If you go with a solid color towel, check out some of the texture options! I opted for a traditional towel so the eye is drawn to clean lines and appealing colors.
- Add finishing touches that will give comfort to you and your guests, like a soft contour rug and the softest toilet paper you won’t have to change so often in Quilted Northern® Mega Rolls.
So, the only thing left to know: Will you be adding color or pattern? Texture or classic?

We did a little refresh on our upstairs bathroom. We painted the mirror, got some new accessories and knobs – and it was like a whole new room.

You have a very cute bathroom. We need to get ours decorated and I really like some of the ideas you have here. We do not have a big bathroom and so I’m trying to make it look nice without making it look crowded.

You did a great job! We’ve been talking about redoing our guest bathroom, and I love this simpler approach rather than just gutting the entire thing.

You’ve made a small bathroom look beautiful and inviting. I hate our small bathroom, but we only have one bathroom also. I totally get the sharing thing, one bathroom never seems like enough and there are only two people in our house.
