Sex, drugs, and riding on the bus. There’s nothing left to uncover from author Mary Miller. She’s savage and unrelenting with some sort of charm you can’t deny.
Always Happy Hour is a brutal read with all the makings of a train wreck one cannot look away from. No matter how gruesome or abusive, each cringe is done with eyes open, unable to peel from the page. It’s too real. Too raw, to not hold truths we all mirror.
Some parts witty, others biting, these compiled stories all share a basic theme of looking for love in all the wrong places. Each ending in a way that leaves you unsatisfied, but unable to process more… like a bad lover you still text in the morning. I had no choice but to read through each page and turn to the next with reckless abandon for my own emotions.
Too much. Too little. The gritty stories offer a glimpse into the depths we go to find a place we are understood. And share the battles of the misunderstood.
A must read… most likely best for over the age of 25.
This is one of the more delicate stories in ALMOST HAPPY HOUR, but the protagonist shares much in common with the other women who populate the book. They are lonely, dissatisfied, bold yet insecure, and Miller’s treatment of them is fascinating. She writes with a clipped yet fluid style and an unflinching honesty.

The stories in this book sound like they’re really interesting. It’s always hard when I find emotional things I relate to in books like these but it does help to hear another person’s perspective.
