“What do you want for Mother’s Day?” he asks.
Hmmmm… I’ve settled in to think about this question, often laughing at the prospect of being given a gift. “Besides listing our house?” I jest. “I want something that I can wear. Something I will pass on. Something that has a story.”
Stories are often told without words, in our family. We have inscription in books, pictures on the walls, afghans hang over the backs of chairs we long remember snuggled into as children. And jewelry. It’s handed from generation to generation- as engagement rings, earrings reset into a bracelet or a beautiful pendant. I have meaningful jewelry, but I have yet to capture my motherhood in something my girls would want to have.
So, I lingered on this question for days, and then I found the most beautiful sapphire pendant, with a diamond. It’s not only stunning, it’s Adelaide and Camille. Sapphire for September and diamond for April. The perfection of my girls, represented in this pendant that would sit close to my heart.
A sapphire pendant holds more than just sentimental value… which is important to me. After being given a gift like this, it comes to hold history, a story, and I love that the history of the gem itself is so heroic (Tradition has it that sapphire is the most sacred gemstone as Moses was given the Ten Commandments on sapphire tablets!). Sapphire is the stone of protection and wisdom, and symbolizes sincerity and devotion (a great engagement ring idea!). It is also believed that the stone has many healing and calming properties. As a symbol of good fortune, truth, honesty, faithfulness and often referred to as the stone of heaven, it’s hard to not want to adorn myself in them… but back to Mother’s Day. Or better yet, back to the story- the pendant that Mom wore every special occasion, the one she let me wear on my Sweet 16, the one she neatly tucks away. Those are the memories, the stories, the things I want my children to remember by a gift I’ve been given.
I am amazed that I get to have two beautiful girls. I am blessed to rock them in my arms, to shield them from hurt, to laugh with them throughout each day… and honored to be their mother. Celebrating Mother’s Day with a gift that I will pass back to Addie and Millie is the perfect choice for me. I envision a small necklace being made for each of the girls with the stones from the necklace many years from now; a way for the girls to remember how meaningful being their mother is to me.

My husband is great about giving me jewelry, but frankly, I would rather get someone to come clean my house for me this year.
We don’t do jewelry ever really (just the cool bead!), but I am hoping to have something on my “someday list”… someday.

Your daughters are so adorable! Sapphire is my favorite stones. My engagement ring was a sapphire. The color is so rich and captivating. This necklace would be a great Mother’s Day gift. It is awesome that your daughters are each represented on the necklace.

This is beautiful!!! I have a Sapphire piece but for no particular reason. Once year my husband gave me a mothers ring with everyone’s birth stones inside. Its one of my most treasured Mother’s Day gift. Hope you get it 🙂

I am in love with that necklace!!! Both my daughter and I are September women, so I have always loved Sapphires! And I adore diamonds too, even though I don’t have a baby in April. But I still think that is so cool you can match your girl’s birthdays to such a beautiful piece of jewelry!

Sapphire is such a beautiful stone. For Mother’s Day, I usually like something handmade from my kids. My husband gets me gift cards for massages as well as my favorite home decor shops.
We don’t do gifts for parents days yet… but I know we will someday. This is on my someday list, for sure!
