I have always yearned to be flawless or some semblance of put together every time I leave my home. It’s not a lofty goal. I’m not trying to embody the #iwokeuplikethis phenomenon that has selfie filters working OT. I just want to turn the cashier’s head at Stop & Shop… or catch my husband staring at me a bit longer.
But at 31 I still leave the house in [sometimes] the state of greasy roots, because I haven’t figured out how to properly use dry shampoo. Or I’ve forgotten gloss- which seems like no big deal, but just that hint of color really does the trick! I just recently learned that my new 2 inch curling iron works as a great straightener… which is good, because my straightener happens to be 10 years old and cracked, so it gets caught and rips my hair out.
I think my point here is that there are a lot of things I’ve neglected to learn about self-care in my life. Not that motherhood has done these things to me… I did them. When I was a teenager, I used needles on my acne(!) and bounced from OTC medications from CVS to everything at the Kiehl’s and Clinique counters. I have never slept well or kept with a routine long enough to make a difference and see how my skin cycles through. And I’ve never learned how to apply my makeup for different looks. Daytime in the Fall and Summer, I am coming to see, should look different. When we go out at night, a little contouring is a good thing.

I will never have flawless skin… it’s not in the cards for me. But I can treat my face better and learn all the tricks to make my look how I want. Maybe in the process I’ll turn a few heads…. but most importantly, I’ll be finding myself in a whole new way! I hope my girls enjoy playing with makeup on my journey with me, and come to the same place I’ve been my whole life: makeup is fun and can help our confidence on bad days, but we don’t need it.

Isn’t it so much more fun to want to play than to feel we have to?

I used to love wearing makeup. Now I sometimes wear foundation with sunscreen but usually just sunscreen.

I’ve definitely fallen into a rut over the years with using the same products, but I do try to change up colors. Also, I wish I had discovered the benefits of moisturizers before my mid-30s.

Base contouring is exactly what I need. I fear I don’t put makeup on properly. I mean, I don’t look atrocious…but just un-schooled, I guess.
Chelley @ A is for Adelaide says
Unschooled- love that. Me too! Let’s werk it this year!

Great post. Brought back the memories of dying my hair with koolaid and getting a perm (who does that?!). Love the quote about being fun.

I think that point of view is a very healthy one–Makeup is fun but I don’t need it! It was actually going to beauty school that made me wear less makeup, because of the unhealthy relationships I saw between my classmates and their beauty products. I am a big advocate of natural beauty, but it’s still fun to break out the mascara once in a while. 🙂
