Tis the season… roaring fires, delicious, rich foods, family gatherings, cold weather, and shopping for gifts!
I enjoy giving unique, practical gifts, and shopping with small businesses. It always makes me feel a bit better about spending money when I get to support people putting in the work every day- from giving gift certificates to local restaurants and salons to shopping for the kids at stores like Bellani Maternity, to giving the best in fashion from Banana Threads, I [almost] look forward to my shrinking bank account! And on these chilly days ahead… maybe even a bit of mommy and me shopping, too!
Banana Threads
Local Rhode Island/Massachusetts based small business, Banana Threads, owner Izzy Beckman has always made some of my most favorite, comfortable pieces, and I am thrilled to have a few more items to add to my collection.
Izzy is mama to three young children. She studied Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design and Theatre Costume at URI, as well as Costume at the London College of Fashion.
Born and raised in Rhode Island, she’s been sewing on a machine since the age of 7, where her grandmother, Elizabeth Nelson, her namesake, taught her to seek creation of whatever she wished out of fabric. Since her passing last year, Izzy continues to create for others as she did with gratitude, love, and positive intention.
Banana Threads is one of a kind clothing and accessories made from upcycled materials. These are wearable art pieces made out of odds and ends from fabric houses, vintage lace, fabric samples that never went to print, misprints, bargain loft treasures, yard sale finds, and whatever else speaks to Izzy, with vibrant colors and textures. The most popular item is the Hoodie Scarf, my personal fave, which is an infinity scarf with a hood. And new this season there are full outfits and one of a kind looks for sale with plenty of matchy-matchy options of scarves, skirts, and leg warmers and, new this season, circle skirts for babes- which made up our Thanksgiving outfits!
The Hoodie Scarf
The hoodie scarves look good with jeans, a dress, or a suit- seriously. They are insanely versatile, comfortable and beautiful. And there are ones with draw strings, which are great for walking the dog, going for a run, or even a bike ride.
My girls love scooping up the hoodie scarves for themselves, as well- perfect to keep them warm outside, but not too hot in the car! I love that they can remove the hood and not lose their hat (parenting win!).
Gift Giving
Being able to match my girls, have fun with fashion, and keep the comfort and fashion of the fall and winter that this New England family loves, is so important! Even Dave got in on it, and let me assure you- he rocks it! For him, dropping the hood back is key! The only bag Dave carries is a large messenger bag, and he prefers to not go everywhere with it, so often, if he takes his hat off, he has to find a place for it. Same with a scarf.
The hoodie scarf can just be unwrapped and hang, staying on your person, but not overheating the body. Helllllloooo, handsome!
Shop and Save!
Each piece in the Banana Threads shop is 100% handmade and unique. No 2 pieces are exactly the same, so no gift is ever a duplicate. How perfect is that for everyone on your list?!
All items are made in Izzy’s studio in Providence, Rhode Island, so you know your purchase is not just beautiful, but supporting small business. As an artist, her goal is to stay on the path of using up-cycled materials and evolving what she makes and how she makes it by continuing to use what is available and having adaptive mental design in order to fill these wishes. Beautiful, flowing art pieces you can wear.
Skirts are available online in 2 sizes – Adult that fits sizes 4-12 and Babe size that fits 2T-4T – They are designed in a way that fits more sizes. Hoodie Scarves are available online, as well. And hoodie scarves, infinity scarves for every occasion, and leg warmers will be available at the Foundry Show that consists of over 65 local artists. Hope to see you there!

I like the hoodie scarf, but my husband would really love it. He walks from South Station to his building on Government center every day and it’s WINDY in the city.
