I’m always amazed by the beers that are produced en masse in pumpkin. It’s a wonder how pumpkin can be brewed and integrated in so many different ways producing quite a few beers, ciders and the like. When my hubby decided to undertake the role of “tester”, I was excited… even more so, I am pleased to present you with these fine brews- sure to make your Thanksgiving dinner and success (and those Sunday football days, too). This excerpt from Dave’s blog TECHDAD, are just his favorites. Follow the link to read about them all!
Traveler Beer Company – Jack-O Shandy This is the tastiest pumpkin beer I’ve sampled to date! Smooth, not bitter at all, even a smooth aftertaste. Lots of cinnamon and clove up front, hints of pumpkin, vanilla and brown sugar. Despite the sweetness, it manages to remain light and isn’t overly cloying. The body is somewhere between a lager and a hefewiezen. Overall very drinkable, and goes well with anything from a burger to fish tacos.
Harpoon – Pumpkin Cider Ah… Now that’s more like it! Harpoon makes a fine cider, and this is that… but more. It seems to based on their standard hard cider, with a touch of pumpkin sweetness and some very nice spices. Overall, it’s not that pumpkin-y, but that’s ok by me – what it is, is a very delicious spiced hard cider, perfect for the season!
Red Hook – “Out of Your Gourd” Pumpkin Porter Interesting. I gotta say, a porter seemed a little questionable as a foundation for a pumpkin beer, but this beer is fantastic! They add a bit of maple syrup which gives it a rich, yummy taste. It’s sweet and full, but not heavy. This is a great beer for drinking, and probably would be great for cooking as well.
California Cider Company – Ace Hard Pumpkin Cider This is a sweet, sour, delicious hard cider with a pumpkin and spice flavor palate. It might be too sweet for some, but the sourness really offsets that in a way that elevates this above most American hard ciders.
Shipyard – Pumpkinhead This is definitely in the top five – this beer tastes like pumpkin pie. Seriously. Hints of vanilla, no bitterness, but not overly sweet. Cinnamon, vanilla, and a little brown sugar. Highly recommended!
Happy November!
