I love this week!!! We are big poetry readers in this house- I often read from a childhood favorite, “Where The Sidewalk Ends”, when Addie wakes up from nap to help her ease into the second half of her day.
Some of our favorites from “Where the Sidewalk Ends” by Shel Silverstein are:
LISTEN TO THE MUSTN’TS
Listen to the MUSTN’TS, child,
Listen to the DON’TS
Listen to the SHOULDN’TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON’TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me–
Anything can happen, child,
ANYTHING can be.
DON’T TELL ME
Please don’t tell me I should hug,
Don’t tell me I should care.
Don’t tell me just how grand I’d feel
If I just learn to share.
Don’t say, “It’s all right to cry,”
“Be kind,” “Be fair,” “Be true.”
Just let me see YOU do it,
Then I just might do it too.
INVENTION
I’ve done it, I’ve done it!
Guess what I’ve done!
Invented a light that plugs into the sun.
The sun is bright enough,
The bulb is strong enough,
But, oh, there’s one thing wrong…
The cord ain’t long enough.
RAIN
FOR SALE (One of Addie’s favorites)
WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS

Are also favorites!

Shel Silverstien is the best! I used to love reading his books as a child and they were actually some of the first books I read alone. 🙂 Great memories!

I hadn’t heard of it until now. I like it though. My daughter (teen) is so good at writing poetry and she devours it when she’s reading. We’re talking stacks of books.
