This week’s prompt made me think of a lot of things. Heartache is funny in that not-so-funny way… I thought of Erica Shea, mostly, because my heart still hurts. But I also thought about where we are in limbo with the house and finding our forever. …and then my Dad. He seeped into my thoughts and I had to write what came, because through the heat and humidity, thinking about him not here with me, breaks me and sends chills through me.
You crept in like the cold.
Winter in January.
The chills reserved for falls through ice.
News you chose to not hear.
Wounds that refused to shut.
The loss of a father.
A husband.
A son.
A brother.
A friend.
The pain is real,
but no one can see.
There is no place to bandage.
No limb to brace.
A body walking limply,
direction unknown.
Held up by strings
that had been dropped.
You left.
Replaced by heartache.

I lost my own dad 2 years ago and I still feel the pain like it was yesterday. Father’s Day and Christmas are the worst. I wish you strength as you go through a difficult time.
