The day our sweet boy came home is also the day my cousin, Dave got married. To say it was a whirlwind adventure is an understatement.
Our dog adoption (or dog-doption) story started off with heartbreak. A sweet Catahoula I wanted to name Alice was waiting for transport when she, and her littermates, became ill and passed very quickly. I cried for days, even though I’d never met her, and promised myself that I would not jump at the chance to adopt until we’d found the right puppy for us. Dave and I were newly married, just over a year, and were ready for the next step- a dog, obviously.
I first saw Carter’s face on a pet finding site, and was completely in love. His little back spots stood out against his brown fur and his dark eyes captured me. I contacted the rescue that had him to learn that he was a part of an unwanted and abused litter in Tennessee, from a purebred lab who met up with a Catahoula. I was shocked by the abuse and immediately flew into action, grabbing Dave’s attention by flashing the cutest picture of this puppy. After just one look, I knew he would be our boy!
The closest transport happened to be coming into NJ, just a couple of hours from my parents’ house, on the same weekend as my cousin’s wedding. Could there be anything more perfect? We didn’t think so, so on a warm October morning, we set out before the sunrise, anxiously anticipating our new bundle. The 7am time came and went… the transport nowhere in sight. Then 9, 10, 11. We finally got a call that the transport broke down in the Carolinas, so we took our tired bodies to IHop for some brunch. It felt like time was going by so slooowly, and after more than our fair share of coffee, we were back at the parking lot, waiting for the transport to arrive…
and then it did!
Carter was one of the first babes off, and with the paperwork handed over, he was ours! We put his green collar on, and walked him around, and then we couldn’t help but pick him up and rock him. And gross. He was SO GROSS! Into the car he went for the 2 hour drive back to my parents’ house. It was close to wedding time and Carter was in need of a bath; this was our first lesson in parenthood- the child before the adult. He got a bath, settled into his crate for a sleep, and we headed to the wedding!
Five years later, he’s still our pride and joy. Getting compliments on how well he listens means the world to us because we’ve always given our sweet dude 100%! Adopting him meant one less shelter dog… but that left us wanting to do more. While grabbing Carter a 55 pound PEDIGREE® Adult Dry Dog Food in Sam’s Club this weekend, I was happy to learn that during this month, all PEDIGREE® products purchased result in a bowl of dog food donated to a pup in need!
Naturally, I bought two bags so we could donate one to our local shelter!
Carter Jay is the perfect first child, and we are so blessed to have such a great older brother for the girls. He loves them, and all the dropped food he can get, and giving back in his honor is truly a joy. Join me by posting a photo of the dog you love to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #LaterShelter for a chance to be featured on SamsClub.com. The PEDIGREE® brand will even donate a bowl of food for every upload!

Carter is so handsome! I love the brown and black coloring. I’m not familiar with the Catahula breed, do they usually have spots, and do their spots merge with the other color with age?

They are a breed from the catahoula parish in TN! They’re more of a southern breed- my friends up here had a few and I fell in love!

What a sweet face–it makes me want to snatch him up and cuddle him. I no longer have dogs but all three were adopted when I did–and so was my first cat and now my second. Adoption is definitely the way to go.
