I love traditions. I shared one of our favorites (Salt Dough Ornaments) last week, and I wanted to share another! Last year we started a Christmas Eve Box!
It’s one of my favorite things to put together because I really put a lot of thought into what would make our Christmas Eve so awesome! This year, Addie is really into Christmas so I wanted to make it super special. I searched high and low for different things and finally settled on the right combination of treats.
For Advent, Addie’s opened a new winter/holiday themed book each night, and we chose to do just a few special gifts for Christmas, so I didn’t want to go overboard, but here are our goodies! We are opening it after mass to enjoy before bed. (Scroll over the photo for more info!)
Do you do a Christmas Eve Box? What’s your Eve Tradition?
Jen Cowart says
Oh I love this idea! I wish my kids were littler. We have developed some traditions for Christmas Eve, but I really like the specialness of the box itself, and having the kids open up to see what’s inside. The first gift of Christmas, really! Our traditions include finding out what this year’s Christmas Eve pajamas are, and hanging up a magic key on our front door so that Santa can get in, since we don’t have a chimney or fireplace. We also put Baby Jesus into the manger of our nativity scene, and wish him a happy birthday before putting out the cookies for Santa. Even though our kids are big now, we have saved one baby gate. We put it up at the end of the hallway on Christmas Eve night. They all sleep in one room together that night and get up together and wait for us to let them into the living room to see the gifts. Clearly they could just step over the gate but it’s a fun tradition to put it there again that one time a year, symbolically. I don’t know if we can do it when they’re all teenagers, but so far, we have still done it.
Thanks for all you share, you do a great job with this blog!

I started making a “finger food party:” for my children when they were 2,3, and 5. We got dressed up in our best clothes, put dance music on and danced in the living room. We had hors douvers just like I would have made for for a grown-ups party, incuding a Hickory Farms gift box of summer sausage and cheese, pigs in blankets, sausage balls, a veggie platter, and a fruit platter. They were too excited to eat dinner anyway, and providing the finger foods made it fun to eat, and the dancing wore them out so they went to bed and to sleep before Santa came. I did that every year until my son went away to the Air Force. He had leave to come home for a week at Christmas, and everything was so rushed. I didn’t do “the party”. The day after Christmas, my son told me he was disappointed because I didn’t make hors dourves! I felt so bad, and really thought that the kids never really thought about that as a tradition.
My son retired from the Air Force this year after serving 20 years. I am making finger foods for the family party, and there will be dancing in the living room, I am so excited to be doing this again, and including my grandchildren in it.
