Victim Blame.
Stop it. Stop it now.
Stop blaming the victim. Victim blame is an old fad that became the norm. Somehow we, as a culture, stopped helping the people being hurt by ignoring the issue, removing the hurt party, or making excuses for the perpetrator of (for all intents and purposes) crimes.
Stop victim blame.
Stop it.
If a child is being bullied in school. The answer is not to grow thicker skin. The answer is not a different school. The answer is not homeschooling. The answer is not removing the child. It’s to stop the bullying. Stop the bully.
Stop it.
If a woman is raped. The answer is not to wear something different. The answer is not to have less drinks. The answer is not to figure out if she said no, or if she really meant no. It’s to stop when it’s not consensual. Stop the rape.
Stop it.
If a photo is stolen from Facebook/blog/etc. by [insert bad person here]. The answer is not to hide from the internet. The answer is not to never share a photo. The answer is not to fear social media. It’s to have harsher crime units for internet crimes. Stop the bad people.
Stop it.
If a person’s photo is taken and shared on social media sites. The answer is not to dress differently. The answer is not to look different. The answer is not to change that person. It’s to stop being an asshole. No really.
Just stop it.

I’m with you on this one Chelly. I’m so over people who try to make excuses for perpetrators. I’m so over parents who sit back and watch their children’s lives detroyed by bullies. If don’t stand up and advocate for our kids and others, we are performing a disservice.

I have to respectfully disagree to a degree. I really believe we’re doing our kids a disservice to imply that they can’t do anything to protect themselves from the idiots out there. No, they can’t control the actions of others, but they can put themselves in less vulnerable positions. Yes, bullies, attackers, stalkers, etc. should be stopped and punished thoroughly, but my children should not be so naive as to think that there will never be bullies, etc. that can’t be stopped. I believe in preparing my child for the world, and if it’s to teach my daughter that walking in a dark alley at 1am wearing a short skirt is a bad idea, then so be it :-).
Chelley @ A is for Adelaide says
I agree with you, actually! I think that our kids and adults can do a lot to protect themselves, but to remove a child from a bully situation and not the bully is, to me, ridiculous- that punishes the child to take them out of their school or class because someone else can’t get their stuff together. As for alleyways… there are lots of strange things that happen there- I don’t want my kids going down one! BUT, if my daughter is wearing a dress, that is not an invitation to touch her. Plain and simple. Teach caution- for sure, but not blame.

Jeannette says
I totally agree with you that we should not blame the victims. However, I also agree with the commenter above that we’ve got to teach our children which things are worth getting upset over. I’m not talking rape, ect here but I do think that we’re too quick to throw around the term bullying. My son has come home several time saying he’s being bullied when in reality it’s just the picking that kids do. In the real world there is going to be adversity. I think we need to teach out kids where the line is that shouldn’t be crossed and then show them how to deal with small issues without immediately becoming the victim.

I can totally see that! Sensitivity needs to be exercised, but also the free spirit and learning of boundaries- if you tell a child no and expel them without warning, they’ve learned nothing really. Teaching limits- I agree.

Patty says
I agree to a point but there are occasions where someone does something that does cause part of a resultant action; for example, the latest case of police brutality in Virginia. The young man was trying to get into a bar even though he was underage. If he had not been trying to get into that bar while underage (I know, we have all done it) he would not have put himself in a place to be arrested.
Teach children to be smart, respectful of others and respectful of the rules. Prejudice and the attitudes that result in bullying are taught not part of a child’s natural make up.

I actually had not seen that story, but he was breaking the law, so I can see your point. Police brutality is a subject that I don’t delve into due to controversy, but teaching children to obey laws and rules from childhood is so important- they need to know that breaking the law isn’t just doing something that isn’t suggested, it’s something that can get you or someone else very hurt.
